O come let us adore Him! Christmas Crib Exhibit (Dec /11)

During the twelve days of Christmas, Holy Cross Church hosted a public display of Presepi (Christmas Cribs) gathered from around the world. The Presepi are primarily from the private collection of Marcella Croce, but also includes many from her friends. They come from Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and from far as Thailand and there are several from local artisans and from elsewhere in Italy.

The display of Nativity scenes began with St. Francis of Assisi in the 13th century - with the greater emphasis on the Incarnation in the later Middle Ages, and Francis' embracing of humility and poverty in his order. The display of cribs from around the world is a tribute, as one visitor noted, to the missionaries who have brought the universal message of the Gospel to the world. For more please click here.

Nine Lessons and Carols at Holy Cross (Dec /11)

On December 18, Holy Cross Church had its annual service of Nine Lessons and Carols. The worship was led by the choir, made up of members of the congregation and friends of our church, including members of the Evangelical Waldensian Church in Palermo. An offering was taken during the service that was given to Sant'Egidio to help provide a hot sit-down and served Christmas supper and gift for the homeless and poor in Palermo.

The service includes readings from the Old Testament of the Fall and foretelling the coming of the Messiah, and from the New Testament, of the birth of Jesus. The congregation were encouraged to join in with the well known carols. The climax of the service is near the end when the lights were turned off and everyone lit a candle as we sang together and heard read the Prologue to John's Gospel - "and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us." Movie Night at Holy Cross: The Tree of Life (Dec /11)

On November 15, several members of Holy Cross Church met at Silvia Crisapi's home to watch and discuss together Terrence Malick's movie "The Tree of Life", first released this past summer. We had a mixed reaction to the film, some keen and others finding it long and slow. I think we all agreed it would be better to view earlier in the day and that the first viewing could use a bit more of an introduction. What follows is a synopsis of the movie and some of the things spoken of in our discussion. They are written from the perspective of one who has seen the movie now a few times.

Spoiler alert!
If you prefer not to know much before seeing a movie, you might like to read this commentary only after you see the movie first. For more please click here.

Associazione culturale HOMBRE Presents "Delia Whitaker said..." at Holy Cross (Nov 2011)
by Christine McRitchie

After our Sunday morning service on November 6, Angela Fogazza presented a 20 minute film of her work with "Hombre" and the Leonardo da Vinci primary school, recorded during the project "Palermo Apre le Porte 2005". Set in Villa Malfitano, the opening scene is a modern dance "Legality! WAKE UP! ". Then follows a monologue (see below) where Clare Fellows (left) (who was a member of Hombre theatre group) enacts Delia Whitaker talking about her life and family. Wearing a beautiful epochal dress she stands under the famous ficus tree in her family garden. The film closes with a Celtic dance - Giulia Pintagro was choreographer. Our thanks to "Hombre" for an enjoyable meeting, we look forward to seeing you all again soon! For more details of the day and photos please click here.

Holy Cross held an ALPHA Course this Autumn (Nov /11)

Roger and Connie Burch led a Student Alpha course this Autumn at Holy Cross at the Chaplaincy apartment. Each night began with a light supper followed by a talk and with great opportunities for discussion. There was also a one “day away” near the end of the course in Castellemare with three talks focused around the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Roger and Connie have attended and taught Alpha courses in Canada for over 10 years. They shared with us their enthusiasm and love for Jesus Christ, their insights into the faith and personal testimony of the way that Jesus has brought them to a lively faith and continues to guide them in their daily lives by his Word and Spirit. Chaplain visits thousand year old hermitage at Camaldoli (August/11)

This past summer I had the opportunity to take some time apart for a monastic retreat to reflect on what God is calling me to and to do some writing on a book that I have been working on about the spiritual ascent or our sanctification in the Spirit. Camaldoli is set high in the mountains in Tuscany, about two hours north of Arezzo by train and bus. This monastery is one of several founded by St. Romauld in the 11th century, in fact next year, 2012, is its 1000th year anniversary! Within the hermitage is a kingdom of silence.

Carey Graziano chosen for Royal Maundy!
(25 gen 2011)

(From Eurobishop Blog) "Westminster Abbey announced yesterday that the Royal Maundy Service will be held at the Abbey on 21 April this year. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will attend. By coincidence, 21 April, besides being Maundy Thursday, is also the occasion of Her Majesty's 85th birthday.

"Traditionally on Thursday in Holy Week the Queen gives a gift of specially minted coins to a number of individuals (corresponding to her age), in recognition of their long and valued service to church and community. So this year, 85 men and 85 women will be so honoured. They are to be selected from the Abbey community, from the Diocese of Sodor and Man and from our own Diocese in Europe."

Mrs. Carey Graziano, one of our wardens (right), in recognition of her faithful service to the Church and community, has just received an invitation from Buckingham Palace to receive this honour. She has graciously accepted, but wants us to understand that she goes representing the work of many in our congregation and in the Diocese in Europe. Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (Jan 25/11)

Will we have the Italian translation of the homily in time? (we did, thanks Silvia!)

Holy Cross participated in three events: preaching and singing at the "Maranatha" gathering as several churches reflected on the eschatological discourse of Jesus in Matthew 24 (photos); speaking at the Roman Catholic parish Church of Ss. Pietro e Paolo; and participating by reading and leading prayers in the closing service for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity at the Cathedral in Palermo.
